CHENNAI: A 20-year-old man died and two others were injured after an unidentified gang attacked them with machetes at the Marina beach late on Thursday.
Police have arrested three suspects, and are looking for three more people.
The deceased was identified as Vignesh, 20, a resident of Avadi. Police said he suffered grievous injuries to the head. The two others who were injured have been identified as Aravindan, 22, from Avadi and Sanjay, 18, from Tiruvallur. While Aravindan escaped with a fracture to a hand, Sanjay has been admitted to a hospital and is in a critical condition.
The three had come to the beach to celebrate Sanjay's birthday. They were seated on the Marina promenade opposite the PWD office on Kamarajar Salai, police said. The three friends, who were under the influence of alcohol, were making a lot of noise while cutting the cake. Around 10pm, an unidentified gang reached the spot with logs and machetes and hacked the three men.
Witnesses passed the information to police, who were conducting vehicle check near Lighthouse. The trio, who were employed as delivery agents in an online portal, were rushed by police to the Government Royapettah Hospital, where Vignesh was declared dead on arrival. Aravindan and Sanjay are undergoing treatment.
The Anna Square police have registered a case and sent the body of Vignesh for postmortem.
Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the residents suspected the three friend to be thieves. The police team nabbed three suspects and have launched a hunt for others.
