Two die from 'alcohol withdrawal syndrome' in Muzaffarpur

MOTIHARI: Two prisoners, who were earlier arrested by police for selling illicit liquor, died during treatment at Motihari sadar hospital and SKMCH, Muzaffarpur, on Thursday.
East Champaran SP Kantesh Kumar Mishra told this newspaper on Friday that both died from alcohol withdrawal syndrome according to doctors' report.
According to police, 200 persons were arrested within seven days for selling illicit liquor in the district, after the hooch incident in which 31 persons died between April 14 and 20 in seven villages. However, the main accused of the hooch case is yet to be arrested.
One of the persons who died on Thursday was identified as Shyam Narayan Mukhiya of Barharwa-Lakhansen under Dhaka police station. He was arrested by police on April 17 with 20 litres of illicit liquor and sent to Motihari central jail. Since Mukhiya's condition was not good, he was sent to Motihari sadar hospital where he died during treatment.
The second victim was identified as Ajay Sahani of Baisaha under Chakiya police station. He was arrested by police for selling liquor and remanded in judicial custody.
