NEW DELHI: Four police constables who were recruited on compassionate grounds and another person have been arrested for allegedly robbing a man of around Rs 10 lakh in southwest Delhi's Sagarpur.
Police said that the five men reached the house of the victim and forced him to give the money. One of the accused was a former employee of the victim and one of the accused constables was his friend.
Deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Manoj C said, "The accused constables have been identified as Vijay Sharma, Deepak Yadav, Manjesh Rana and Ankit Kasana. All four of them joined the force in 2020 and were posted in the 8th battalion. The other accused has been identified as Manish, who was Sharma's friend."
According to police, the accused went to the house of Rajnish, who runs a business of crypto currency, on April 19 and the four cops barged in, posing as officials from the cyber unit.
The cops, who were not in uniform, allegedly threatened the victim to return Manish his money and took away around Rs 10.4 lakh, police said. Manish was also present during the incident. The cops even thrashed Rajnish and snatched his gold chain.
Following Rajnish's statement, a robbery case was registered. "The robbed items, including the cash, were recovered from the possession of the accused persons. Two cars that were used in the crime have also been seized," the DCP said.
Police sources said Manish had left the job around three months ago and told his friend Vijay that Rajnish had a large sum of money at home. Following this information, they made the plan to visit the house as sleuths of Cyber Cell and flee with the cash.
