COIMBATORE: Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar on Friday distributed 44 pushcarts for door-to-door garbage collection in 20 wards of the central zone.
The pushcarts, which were procured at a cost of 9.86 lakh, have separate bins to collect degradable and non-degradable waste. They will be useful in collection of garbage from small lanes, where it would be difficult for vehicles to move around.
Pushcarts are also useful in places where adequate number of pick-up vehicles are unavailable, a corporation official said. "The civic body has ordered 105 Tata Ace vehicles and 100 e-vehicles for door-to-door waste collection. Tata Ace vehicles have arrived and will be deployed soon. Sixty e-vehicles are ready for dispatch," he said. Councillors have been urging the civic body to buy new pushcarts as old ones have become unusable.
Meanwhile, the mayor and corporation commissioner M Prathap inspected developmental works in the north zone, including construction of additional classrooms at Maniyakarampalayam Corporation Higher Secondary School at a cost of 99.10 lakh.
