MUMBAI: A puppy dog — which was being cared for by the local animal lovers at Powai, Rambaug Lane — fell to its death from a gap on the eighth floor of a building on Thursday morning.

Shocked local animal feeders said that the puppy had somehow managed to enter the Powai Lake Heights Building number 4 and climbed up to the 10th floor, but while a security guard was trying to usher the puppy down the stairs, the animal slipped down from a gap on the eighth floor, which is a refuge area of this tower.
Animal feeder Deepak Sharan said: "It is terribly upsetting and disturbing that the puppy has died like this because of an open gap on the eighth floor of the building. Earlier last month, an old male dog was badly injured and bleeding profusely in the same complex, near Building number 5, under mysterious circumstances. Now, this pup has died, which is very unfortunate."
Activist Seema Sharma of Heavens Abode Foundation (HAF) commented: "The puppy death after falling from a great height is shocking and should be inquired into. Earlier, the animal lovers had given an application to Powai police station with regards to the suspicious injuries found on an old male dog. The animal feeders from the nearby buildings were also recently stopped from entering the complex of Powai Lake Heights, which is wrong since the feeders are only showing compassion for the animals."
When TOI visited Powai Lake Heights complex on Friday, two security guards at the entrance confirmed that the puppy fell from the open refuge area on the eighth floor.
However, they refused to contact any building secretary or chairperson in this regard.
When TOI asked the guards for any contact phone numbers, they said that they are not allowed to share any phone numbers.
TOI later spoke to a federation member from building number 6, Kumar Swamy, who only said:"I cannot comment on whatever happened in building number 4. I only look after the security arrangements in this federation. So, you are talking to the wrong man."
Activist Seema Sharma added: "If a dog can fall down from the eighth floor, the building residents must at least ensure a safety netting at that level in order to avoid such tragic accidents for animals or humans in future."
