PRAYAGRAJ: A day after Asad alias Asad Kalia, a key operative of the gang of slain Atiq Ahmed, Prayagraj police sources on Thursday said it is a "big catch" as Kalia was known for handling the gangster's extortion activities.
Kaila, who was carrying Rs 50, 000 cash reward on his head , was arrested by a team of Kareli police here on Wednesday. A country-made pistol of 0.315 bore along with two live cartridges was seized from his possession. Police sources told TOI four cases were registered against Kalia in cases related to seeking extortion money and hatching conspiracy.
A senior police officer told TOI, "Kalia was handling Atiq's financial activities, including sale and purchase of lands. He along with Atiq's son Ali Ahmed had sought Rs 5 crore extortion money from a close relative of the gangster in December 2021, following which an FIR was registered against him with Kareli police station. ."
