CHENNAI: As many as 274 students from government schools, who have been qualified to appear for JEE (Advanced) exam, will undergo a residential coaching programme in Chennai for 45 days.
School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and sports and youth welfare minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated the programme at the Government Model Higher Secondary School in Saidapet on Friday.
Subject experts, IIT faculty members and trainers will train students in chemistry, physics and maths. They also will be given training on solving the problems in a scheduled time.
“This year 3,600 students from government schools appeared for the JEE (Main) exam. Of them 274 qualified. Interested students will be given residential coaching. Our aim is to help government school students to study in NITs and IITs,” Anbil Mahesh said.
The students will stay in two hostels at the Saidapet school.
Last year 696 students appeared for JEE (Main) exam, and 168 of them qualified for JEE (Advanced). As many as 20 students joined in NITs and IIT-Madras due to the residential coaching, which was launched last year.
All students were given tablets to help them prepare for the JEE.
Dhanusiya, a student of Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Modakurichi, said she was confident of cracking the JEE and wanted to join IIT. "I got 82% in JEE (Main) through self-study. The coaching will help me ace the JEE (Advanced)," she said.
Dharshini, a daughter of a farmer in Nagercoil, said she wanted to pursue engineering in a top institute like IIT or NIT. "My teacher travelled with me to Chennai to enrol me for the coaching. My parents want me to do well in the exam," she said.
Health minister Ma Subramanian said joining IITs was once beyond the reach of government school students and coaching would help them improve their standard of life.
