GURGAON: To streamline traffic movement at Pataudi Chowk, one of the busiest junctions in the city, traffic police are planning to make some changes at the crossing.
A team headed by DCP (traffic) Virender Vij visited the spot on Thursday along with senior officers to identify work that needs to be done at the junction, which is among the city’s blackspots. This includes painting zebra crossings, repairing traffic signals, pruning trees, removing hoardings and installing barricades.
The issue of congestion at Pataudi Chowk was also raised at the monthly road safety committee meeting chaired by deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav on Wednesday. To streamline traffic and reduce deaths in accidents at four major roads with the most blackspots, the district administration directed officials to adopt safety measures such as construction of footpaths, traffic signals and streetlights. These roads — NH-48, Sohna road, Pataudi road and Farrukhnagar road — witness heavy traffic movement daily and a large number of accidents are reported on these roads. Pataudi road is among the major roads of the city as it connects Old Gurgaon to new sectors along Dwarka Expressway and KMP.
“During Thursday’s inspection, we identified some areas which need immediate attention to improve traffic flow at the crossing. The department concerned will be informed about the work that needs to be done,” DCP Vij told TOI.
Sudhir Kumar, a resident of Sector 10, said Pataudi Chowk is permanently choked with heavy traffic. “The situation is very bad and there is always chaos,” said Kumar, adding that they hope the authorities will focus on improving traffic movement at the crossing.
Another resident said the intersection also needs improvement in road design, installation of signage, patchwork, and enforcement of traffic norms.
According to traffic police, a place which records 10 accidents or five deaths in accidents in a year is identified as blackspot. The city has a total of 37 blackspots, of which 19 are on roads maintained by NHAI. A total of 325 fatalities were recorded between 2019-2021 at the 37 spots.
According to data, many road crashes are reported in between November and March due to low visibility on roads.
