GURGAON: The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (
MCG) carried out checks and seized 17 vehicles carrying unsegregated waste on Thursday.
The vehicles, including rickshaw trolleys and tractor trolleys, were impounded by the civic body. These vehicles had collected waste from DLF 1, Sector 23, Carterpuri, Palam Vihar and Atul Kataria Chowk. Officials said the rickshaw trolleys seized belonged to the private vendors collecting waste from different parts of the city.
“The MCG commissioner directed the teams to conduct checks so that the mixed waste dumping is stopped. On Thursday, the teams inspected waste-carrying vehicles at multiple sites and found mixed waste collection. The vehicles impounded have been kept at the MCG office in Sector 42. The civic body has been requesting residents too to segregate waste at the source and the concessionaire has been directed to ensure that the vehicles are compartmentalised to carry segregated waste," said MCG spokesperson S S Rohilla.
The teams also penalised 80 people and confiscated 130 kg of banned single-use plastic from them. They were issued penalties to the tune of Rs 62,500, said the MCG officials.
In January, MCG started a campaign to seize vehicles collecting mixed waste. Previously, teams seized vehicles carrying mixed waste at several parts of the city. MCG started segregated waste collection on October 20 last year. However, residents raised the concern that even if they give segregated waste, the waste collectors mix it while transporting it to the dumping sites or landfill.
