CHENNAI: People visiting the memorials or statues of leaders in Tamil Nadu no longer have to search for plaques to learn their history as the state government has decided to utilise technology in the best possible way. They plan to place QR codes on the statues and memorials so that people with their smartphones can scan them and get complete details of the leaders.
Minister for information and publicity M P Saminathan on Thursday informed the state assembly that the installation of QR codes would commence soon. "The work of installing QR codes on memorials and statues will commence within a week starting with the Tiruvalluvar statue on Kamaraj road (in Chennai). By scanning the QR codes, people visiting the memorials can access the history of the leader through their smartphones," said Saminathan.
State officials said along with QR codes, the work of uploading the 360-degree view of the memorials and statues would also be undertaken. "There are 81 memorials in the state and DIPR will start the process of photographing the 360-degree view of the memorials. Then the photos will be uploaded on www.tndipr.com and the public can view the complete structure of the memorials through their mobile phones," said an official, seeking anonymity.
"In Chennai, QR codes will be installed in 15 statues and memorials and their complete details will be available on the website. The process of uploading the photos of memorials and statues will be completed in two months," said the official.
