Gumla: Considered the nursery for football and hockey, Gumla district is now eyeing to promote cricket at the grassroots. The district administration has come up with a turf wicket and three concrete pitches for the purpose at the Telanga Kharia stadium and has also procured kits worth Rs 10 lakh.
Officials said it is part of their plan to provide a suitable environment for the promotion of different kinds of sporting activities in the district to make it one of the sporting capitals of Jharkhand.
Gumla DC Sushant Gaurav said, “We have come up with the required infrastructure for cricket at the Telanga Kharia stadium. The kits will be provided free of cost to the players for practice. We will devise certain standard operating procedures for the purpose. We hope Gumla will also churn out cricket players in future.”
District cricket association secretary Jitendra Kumar Singh hailed the efforts of the administration and said, “Gumla could not host any state-level tournament for the last many years due to the lack of facilities. The administration’s initiative will give a boost to the cricket players here.”
