Italian major Eni has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SPP, Slovakia’s largest energy supplier, to cooperate in the gas and LNG sector. The pair would form a commercial cooperation, aimed at identifying initiatives to contribute to Slovakia’s ability to diversify gas supplies, Eni said in its statement.
The signature took place on the occasion of the State visit of Italian President Sergio Mattarella to Slovakia, the statement reads.
Under the agreement, Eni and SPP will evaluate initiatives in the areas of trading and management of regasification and transportation capacities to secure and strengthen strategic supply of natural gas to be consumed in the Slovak Republic.
This signature highlights potential areas of cooperation and collaboration among European energy players to enhance the continent’s access to safe, reliable and sustainable energy sources, Eni said.
Eni notes on its website that gas plays a central role in its strategy to achieve zero net GHG emissions (scope 1,2,3) by 2050. It remains a key element not only for Eni’s business, but also to strengthen the security of energy supply, the company states.
The combination of these two aspects - reduction of GHG emissions and energy security - makes natural gas a major contributor to the energy transition, Eni says on its site. For these reasons, the gas component will become increasingly dominant in Eni’s production mix, accounting for 60 percent of hydrocarbon production in 2030 and over 90 percent in 2050, in a context in which overall hydrocarbon production is expected to reach a plateau in 2025 and then decline over time, Eni adds.
The use of natural gas to improve energy access is also part of Eni’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
