Women’s club creates huge logo using millets
Berhampur: Members of Inner Wheel Club, a 99-year-old women’s organisation here, on Wednesday created a logo of the club using millets to promote consumption of the cereal for healthy living.
As many as 40 members of the club took over four hours to create the 20x20 feet logo using around 2,100 kg of millet crops including ragi, suano, bajra, tangu.
United Nations has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets.
Sanghamitra Dalai, mayor of Berhampur Municipal Corporation, and Subash Moharana, chairman, Odisha Cashew Development Corporation, who attended the programme praised the efforts of the club members.
“Chief minister Naveen Patnaik has taken several steps to promote and cultivate millets. The state also observed Mandia Divas on November 10 to urge people to include mandia in their daily menu,” Dalai said. She said the government has also set up millet cafes run by women self-help groups (SHGs) in different districts.
Saka Sirisha, secretary of the club, said they had procured millet crops worth over Rs 2 lakh for the purpose. The fund was raised from donation by members, she added.
“After displaying the millet logo at a kalyan mandap for public viewing, we have decided to distribute the crops to needy people in around 50 villages adjoining Berhampur,” said Gouri Patro, president of the club.
