Three tribal girls, aged between 14 to 17 years, were reportedly gangraped in Kalahandi district of Odisha while returning home on the night of April 16, officials said today.
According to the police, on the fateful night, the three minor girls were returning home after watching jatra (folk theatre) when they were intercepted by five men. They said the five accused, stopped the girls and allegedly gangraped them in a nearby forest.
Bijepur police station inspector-in-charge Lingaraj Sethy said the incident happened on the night of April 16 (Sunday), however, a complaint was filed by the tribe’s elders at the Bijepur police station on Wednesday evening after it was found that the alleged rapists belong to a different community.
The senior officer said that based on the complaint by the tribal elders, an FIR under the POCSCO Act, relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, has been registered.

Reports quoting local sources said the tribal leaders convened a meeting after the families of three rape survivors approached them and narrated their daughters’ ordeal to them.
The tribal leaders decided that the crime must be reported to the police as the accused belonged to a different community, leading to the delay in filing the complaint.
As per reports, on Thursday, the minor girls had to travel to three different hospitals for medical examination as no female doctors were available. Finally, doctors at the Bhawanipatna government hospital conducted a medical checkup of the victims which confirmed sexual assault.
Meanwhile, Kalahandi Adivasi Sangha president Prakash Majhi issued an ultimatum, threatening protests by the tribals if the accused are not arrested within the next 24 hours, adding that a team of the Adivasi welfare group will visit the girls’ families and decide the future course of action.
