KOLKATA: From 38.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, the maximum temperature in Kolkata climbed up to 40.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Salt Lake recorded 42°C as the maximum temperature.
Officials in the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Kolkata said the heatwave would continue for at least two more days and the maximum temperature would hover around 40 degrees before the mercury started sliding down from Saturday. "Dry, northwesterly wind is prevailing over the region. The conditions suggest no significant change in maximum temperature between Thursday and Friday. There will be gradual fall by two-three degrees after that," stated RMC Kolkata. The Met office expects thundershowers between Saturday and Sunday. "The impact of thundershowers will depend on the intensity and how widespread the rain is," said an official.
The Met office has predicted the hot-and-humid southwesterly winds to start injecting moisture into the land from Saturday. Once the moisture incursion started, it would make conditions favourable for thunder cloud formation, weathermen said.
