RAIPUR: Four villagers, including three women, were killed when an earthen mine collapsed on them in Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday evening. Four bodies have been retrieved but a few more villagers are feared buried. Rescue work is on.
A group of men and women from Gadtar and Pontedand villages, around 300km north of Raipur, had gone into a mine to excavate soil from the banks of Lohariya River. Suddenly a soil mound collapsed around 6pm. Those who survived the mine collapse ran to inform other villagers and gather a rescue party.
People began digging desperately with shovels and even bare hands. Police soon joined them. Baikunthpur MLA Ambika Singhdev and senior officials also arrived. Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel expressed grief over the accident.
