With a tired boat amid a storm, Abhilash Tomy heads home as leader

PANAJI: With just 1,157 nautical miles away from the finish line at Les Sables d'Olonne, former naval aviator Abhilash Tomy has taken the pole position in the Golden Globe Race 2022, even as he has to contend with a storm brewing to his north.

But it is the same storm, that Tomy used very strategically to slingshot his way to the top of the leaderboard.
"Abhilash is now king of the leaderboard. He is now in first place," said race organiser Don McIntyre.
"The boat is tired, I am tired, and we are looking for a little bit of rest and recuperation. I am comfortable right now and I am eating twice what I was eating around the equator. I have enough food and water to drink," said Tomy in a short satellite call to the race organisers.
Despite the intensity of the race, Tomy said he is beginning to feel a tinge of sadness because the 30,000-mile race is drawing to an end.
"It's like I am already missing this race," said Tomy with a laugh. "I am already getting withdrawal symptoms."
His direct competitor, Kirsten Neuschafer, appeared to be stuck in windless conditions. The GGR race organisers feel that strategic choices made by the two sailors around the Azores will decide the winner. Tomy was the first to accurately guess the developing low-pressure system.
