PRAYAGRAJ: In a first, the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has given tickets to three Muslims to contest the upcoming urban local body polls for the post of corporator from three wards -- Daira Shah Ajmal, Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar and Atala.
While Bilal Ahmad has been fielded from Atala, Jainab Bano and Seema Begum have been fielded from Daira Shah Ajmal and Guru Teg Bahadur nagar (Kareli) respectively.
BJP spokesman Rajesh Kesarwani told TOI “The party has fielded three Muslim candidates who have been associated with BJP since long. Party has found winnable quality of these three aspirants from Muslim dominated wards and fielded them.”
He said this was the first time in the city when the party has fielded Muslim candidates for the post of corporator in urban local body polls.
A total of 27 Muslims, mostly from the party's minority wing, had sought tickets to contest for the post of corporators in at least six wards having a sizable strength of Muslim voters. The aspirants had submitted their detailed resume before the BJP mahanagar party leadership, citing the roles and responsibilities that they have been performing in the party’s minority wing for the past five years or more.
All of them had interacted with senior party leaders but only three were successful.
The party had received 32 and 792 applications for mayoral and corporators posts.
