Guwahati: Devotees will experience a hassle-free movement and an enhanced ambience with the renovation of the infrastructure at Kamakhya temple, which is one of the 51 Shakti peethas, soon as the public works department (PWD) is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the “Kamakhya Corridor project” of the state government.
The project has been initiated by the state government drawing inspiration from the Kashi-Vishwanath Corridor, about which state finance minister Ajanta Neog told the house in her
budget speech last month.
The ancient Kamakhya temple in Guwahati is one of the most sacred temples in India with an average footfall of 15,000 people per day. During Ambubachi Mela, the number of visitors goes up to 2 lakh per day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday in a tweet said the Kamakhya corridor will be a landmark initiative. “Kashi-Vishwanath Dham and Shree Mahakal Mahalok have been transformative as far as the spiritual experience is concerned. Equally important is the fact that tourism is enhanced, and the local economy gets a boost,” he added.
His tweet came a day after the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a graphic video about how the renovated Kamakhya corridor will look once completed.
The PWD (building) division will execute the Kamakhya corridor project, aimed at improving pilgrimage experience and promoting tourism. The project will include a renovated entrance, covered pedestrian walkways from the entrance to the temple, renovated buildings and parks among others. However, the officials have not disclosed anything related to the project plan nor the budget.
Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner Pallav Gopla Jha held a meeting with the officials of other departments regarding the project. He said the district administration will look after the land part and acquisition, if required, for the project.
The PWD (roads) division is already working on reconstruction of the alternative road to Kamakhya temple, which was opened in 2021 but remained closed to the public since May last year due to various construction faults.
