A 19-year-old man is behind bars Tuesday after police pounced to nab the accused killer linked to a summer 2022 slaying.

Stacie Mischel, 19, was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of homicide and attempted homicide, the Stockton Police Department said.

The investigation began on the evening of Aug. 4 near Morada Lane and Maranatha Drive, just west of Highway 99. Police said Jaylen Malone, 19, of Lathrop, was driving east on Morada Lane past Holman Road. Malone was traveling with two people inside of a white Dodge Charger when someone fired multiple gunshots at Malone's vehicle.

When officers arrived, they found Malone and a 17-year-old girl inside of the Dodge Charger bloodied and suffering from gunshot wounds. Malone died at the scene. The girl was rushed to the hospital and survived.

After several months of trying to piece the case together, detectives got a break this week when they were pointed toward Mischel. He was arrested and no injuries were reported.

Mischel is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. He faces life in prison, if convicted.

The arrest comes just a day after Stockton residents gathered with community leaders at the Arnold Rue Community Center at a town hall meeting to discuss public safety.

The town hall meeting was organized in the wake of an April 12 shooting at Unity Park that left a Cesar Chavez High School student dead.
