Kanpur: Vehicle drivers beware! Wrong side driving will attract suspension of their driving licence and the second violation of wrong side driving will lead to cancellation of the driving licence. A decision to this effect was taken by divisional commissioner Raj Shekhar in the first divisional road security committee meeting held here on Tuesday.
Expressing displeasure over increasing road accidents the commissioner asked the officers concerned to make collective efforts to reduce road accidents. While reviewing the road accidents in the division, he expressed satisfaction over reduction in the number of road accidents in Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat and Etawah as compared to the last year. He however expressed his deep displeasure over increase in the number of accidents in Farrukhabad, Kannauj and Auraiya districts in comparison to the previous year.
It was revealed in the meeting that most of the road accidents took place due to negligence of drivers driving on the wrong side. The divisional transport officer (Enforcement) said that 1,116 vehicles had been challaned in the division due to wrong side driving.
The commissioner said action should be taken against the erring drivers by suspending /cancelling their licence under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act as per the instructions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety.
Even if the driver of the vehicle belongs to any other district/state, the licence should be sent to the concerned licensing authority for suspension/cancellation. It was also suggested that if a person, using his civic duties, clicks and sends photographs of a person driving on the wrong side, then the identity of such person will be kept secret and he will also be honoured. DCP traffic informed that new vehicles are being delivered by some vehicle dealers without affixing high security number plates on the vehicle. The commissioner said if vehicles without number plates are found on the road, immediate action should be taken to detain them, and the transport department should take action to suspend the trade licence of such dealers. “Under no circumstances, a vehicle should be given by the dealers without applying HSRP”, the commissioner said.
