Senior official suspended for 2-minutes delay of Vande Bharat Express in Kerala, reinstated after protest
The train was delayed during the first trial run as the first signal was given to Venad Express at Piravom station

Indian Railways suspended a senior employee who was responsible for the delay of Vande Bharat Express by two minutes in its first trial run in Kerala, on Monday. The Vande Bharat Express, supposed to cover the route between Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, was held up for two minutes at the Piravom railway station, reports said.
The train was delayed as the first signal was given to the Venad Express at Piravom station. Due to this, the action was taken against BL Kumar, chief controller in the traffic section of the Thiruvananthapuram division, and he was suspended.
The order had to be revoked later due to the involvement of labour unions. The leaders of the unions protested and Kumar was reinstated.
The Venad Express had arrived at the same time and it was jam-packed, hence the officials gave it a green signal to pass first, which caused the delay of the semi-high-speed train Vande Bharat.
This VB Express is the first in Kerala and is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 25, 2023.
On April 17, the train completed its first trial run and covered the distance between Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur in 7 hours and 10 minutes. The reverse route from Kannur took 7 hours and 20 minutes. If it runs according to the planned time, it will be the fastest train on the route.
The Indian Railways is planning to upgrade the signalling and rail infrastructure in Kerala in order to accelerate Vande Bharat. The hope is that these additions will solve Kerala’s long-due need for timely track renovation and replacement of the outdated signalling system.
Indian Railways extended this Vande Bharat Express service from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod.
Initially, it was proposed to run between Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur only but Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday announced that it will also cover Kasaragod. He said this decision was taken following a request from Union Minister of State V Muraleedharan.
