Residents of Jaknibandh have raised concerns over the stench emanating from a tributary of the Sal river, which passes through the locality. They said the stench started coming after some oily dark substance along with raw sewage surfaced on the
waterbody.
The locals pointed out that the oily substance and the sewage were first spotted a few days ago, complaining that the stench of raw sewage is unbearable at night.
They said that there has been indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage somewhere upstream in the last few days.
The water has been stagnant due to the tidal effect sending out the stench, the residents explained.
‘The Navhind Times’ has learnt that an illegal scrapyard operates on the riverbank.
The tributary merges into the Sal a few metres away.
The residents urged the health department to identify the source of the raw sewage and initiate action in the matter.
“Neither we can eat nor sleep properly due to the stench,” they complained.
