MUMBAI: The BMC is aiming to complete one arm of Lower Parel's Delisle bridge by the first week of May while the entire bridge has been targeted to be opened by June 30.

But opposition party members have alleged that it is unlikely that work on the bridge will be completed within these deadlines. The BMC had earlier set a May 31 deadline for completing the bridge.

It’s been almost five years since Delisle bridge was shut for traffic after it was found to be unsafe. Such an inordinate delay to rebuild the bridge is unconscionable. Thousands of motorists have suffered because of traffic diversions. BMC has now announced a new date for its opening, but critics view it with skepticism. The administration needs to be held accountable for its failure to complete crucial public infrastructure projects on time.

Worli MLA Aaditya Thackeray, in whose constituency the bridge falls, said in a tweet, "It's shocking to hear that most road and bridge works across Mumbai are virtually shut due to the lack of gravel supply from regular suppliers for over two weeks."
A BMC official said there have been problems at the ready-mix concrete (RMC) plant in Navi Mumbai from where gravel comes for construction work. "For the last 15 days we haven't been getting gravel for concreting work required to be done at the site. The required quantity has started coming in only since Monday. But this too is not as much as is needed to do the work speedily," said an official. "Besides, there was also a shortage of water tankers a few days ago, which again hit the progress of work."
