China orders probe after fire kills 21 in Beijing hospital
China has ordered an investigation into a fire that killed 21 people at a Beijing hospital, one of the deadliest in the capital in recent years, but many social media posts on the incident were deleted as people questioned a delay in announcing the news. Social media showed dramatic videos of people using tied bed sheets to climb down the walls to escape smoke and flames after the fire broke out around 1 p.m. (0500 GMT) on Tuesday in Changfeng Hospital.
Sudan clash: Death toll reaches 270, over 2,600 injured
As many as 270 people have been killed and more than 2,600 have been injured in the unrest in Sudan, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) officials citing Sudan's Ministry of Health Emergency Operations Center, reported CNN. Fighting continued in Sudan as forces loyal to duelling generals fought for strategic positions in the city and accused one another of breaking the ceasefire hours after an internationally mediated ceasefire was scheduled to take effect.
Pradhan asks IITs to ensure zero tolerance for discrimination on campuses
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan called for the complete eradication of social discrimination from campuses of educational institutions. Chairing the 55th IIT Council meeting here on Tuesday, he said students of Indian Institute of Technology must aspire to become job creators rather than job seekers. "There should be no social discrimination in any institute, be it IITs or private institutions. It is the responsibility of the authorities and the students to ensure that there is no discrimination on campuses," he told reporters after the meeting.
UP: 2 injured in clash over land dispute, 1 arrested
Two persons received gunshot injuries during a clash between two groups over a land dispute in Kutbi village here following which one accused was arrested, police said on Wednesday. Pankaj and Vishal got into a fight over a land dispute late on Tuesday evening. Following this, Vishar and his father opened fire injuring Pankaj and another person, they said. SHO of Shahpur police station Vinay Sharma said Vishal has been arrested and attempts were on to nab the others. Security has been tightened in the village and extra police have been deployed as a precautionary measure, the official said.
China offers to facilitate Israel-Palestinian peace talks
China's foreign minister told his Israeli and Palestinian counterparts that his country is ready to help facilitate peace talks between the two sides, in its latest effort at mediation in the region. In separate phone calls to the two officials on Monday, Qin Gang expressed China's concern over intensifying tensions between Israel and Palestinians and its support for a resumption of peace talks, the Foreign Ministry said in statements issued late Monday.

U.S. oil may bounce moderately to $81.92 per barrel, before falling again. The contract managed to stabilize around a support of $80.14 and pierce above a resistance at $80.89. The first part of a correction from the April 12 high of $83.53 could have completed. The next resistance will be at $81.92, around which, the bounce may end. The drop over the past few days looks deep enough to confirm a reversal of the uptrend from the March 20 low of $64.12.
Biden, Harris release 2022 tax returns
US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have released their 2022 federal income tax returns. Biden and his wife filed their income tax return jointly and reported federal adjusted gross income of $579,514, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the White House. The first couple paid $169,820 in combined federal, Delaware, and Virginia income taxes. And their 2022 effective federal income tax rate is 23.8 per cent.

US: 4 dead, 3 wounded in Maine shootings
Four people died and three others were wounded in two shootings in the northeasternmost US' Maine state. Police were called to a home in Bowdoin on Tuesday morning, where they said four people were found dead. Shortly after that, gunfire reportedly erupted on Interstate 295 in Yarmouth, injuring three people who were inside their vehicles, Xinhua news agency reported. One person has been taken into custody but the person's identity has not been released.
Kim says N Korea finishes development of 1st spy satellite
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country has completed the development of its first military spy satellite and ordered officials to go ahead with its launch as planned, state media reported on Wednesday. During his visit to the North’s aerospace agency Tuesday, Kim stressed it’s crucial to acquire a space-based surveillance system in the face of what he called U.S.-led security threats, the Korean Central News Agency said.
4.6 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia's Bengkulu
An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale struck 62 km West of Bengkulu, Indonesia on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. Bengkulu is the capital of the Indonesian province of Bengkulu. The earthquake occurred at 04:09:29 (UTC+05:30) and hit Bengkulu at a depth of 48.8 km, the USGS informed. The earthquake's epicentre was 3.891°S and 101.714°E, respectively. No casualties have yet been reported. Further details are awaited.
Star Entertainment announces 500 job cuts, trims earnings view as conditions worsen
Australia's Star Entertainment Group Ltd on Wednesday announced 500 job cuts and trimmed its annual earnings forecast, sending its shares 11% lower, as regulatory restrictions and weak consumer behaviour dent the casino operator's earnings. The company will lay-off some full-time equivalent employees across the group, cancel short-term and other incentives for fiscal 2023, among others, to reduce its operating expenditure.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Democratic leaders in Congress will not negotiate with Republicans over the government debt limit, the White House said, after a call on Tuesday among Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. They agreed that they would not "negotiate over default and Republicans should pass a clean bill," the White House said in a statement. Biden told Schumer and Jeffries he was ready to have a separate negotiation over the budget once Republicans present a plan, the White House said.

North Korean leader orders spy satellite launch as planned -KCNA
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered officials to launch the first spy satellite as planned, saying that boosting reconnaissance capabilities is a priority to counter "threats" from the United States and South Korea, state media reported on Wednesday. North Korea in December conducted what it called an important "final phase" test for a spy satellite and said it would complete preparations for the launch by April. During a visit to the National Aerospace Development Administration on Tuesday, Kim urged deployment of the satellite as scheduled and ordered deploying multiple reconnaissance satellites on different orbits to bolster the country's surveillance capabilities, state news agency KCNA said.
