NOIDA: A septuagenarian with several comorbid conditions succumbed to Covid-19 on Tuesday at District Combined Hospital in Sector 39. This is the first Covid-linked death reported in the district in over 10 months. On June 24 last year, an eight-year-old girl suffering from pneumonia died due to Covid-related complications at Child PGI.
Over the last fortnight, the district has seen a spurt in cases. It added 129 fresh cases on Tuesday alone. Currently, there are 689 active cases but hospitalization has been low at 30. On April 13, the administration issued a notification making wearing face masks mandatory in all public places, including offices, schools/colleges, hospitals, malls and cinema halls and public transport.
According to health officials, the 78-year-old patient, a resident of the Delta area in Greater Noida, was undergoing treatment for severe anaemia, pancytopenia, sepsis and multi-organ dysfunction syndrome treatment at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida since April 14 and was referred to the District Combined Hospital for further treatment on Tuesday.
While relatives of the patient created a ruckus at DCH accusing the hospital of negligence in treatment, health officials claimed that the patient was in a critical condition and contracting the virus further affected him. He tested positive for Covid during an antigen test at GIMS.
"The patient was brought to the Sector 39 facility on Tuesday from GIMS. He died of multiple health complications late in the evening," Dr Tritya Saxena, the nodal officer at the district combined hospital, told TOI.
Neighbouring Ghaziabad logged 93 new cases in the past 24 hours and currently has 395 active patients. Fourteen of them are currently admitted to the hospital. The district has not reported any deaths due to the virus since June 2022 when an 88-year-old man from Nehru Nagar with comorbidities like hypotension and diabetes succumbed to the virus.
