After several users pointed out that the Smart Lock option was missing from their devices, Samsung acknowledged the issue and has now come up with an answer. Samsung has confirmed that the Smart Lock feature will return via a Google Play Services update. The update is all set to start rolling out next week.

According to user complaints, the Smart Lock functionality was still available on Galaxy devices, but the available options aren’t listed anymore. This annoyed the users because they were now required to unlock their phones with a PIN, password, or biometrics (fingerprints or face).

You can temporarily resolve the issue by rebooting your device once or twice

Using Android’s Smart Lock feature, users can keep their smartphone or tablet unlocked while they are near it, add locations where their devices will stay unlocked, and also add Bluetooth devices that will keep their devices unlocked while connected. Basically, you add a trusted place where your device can remain unlocked.

However, the three Smart Lock options—On-Body Detection, Trusted Places, and Trusted Devices—weren’t showing up on affected Galaxy devices because of a bug. Samsung staff pointed out that Google provides these features and requires verification. And since Smart Lock is a GMS server feature, the modified version of the app is slated to start rolling out next week. Pixel smartphone owners will receive the update earlier than Samsung Galaxy device owners.

The Google Play Services app will be updated automatically, bringing back the options for Samsung and other affected Android devices. Several users have noted that rebooting the Galaxy devices once or twice can temporarily resolve the issue.
