JMC-G questions dairy booths outside vending zones in city
Jaipur: Members of the licensing committee of JMC-Greater (JMC-G) have alleged that the state government has earmarked spots outside the demarcated vending zones for several dairy booths, whose allocation process is on, in violation of a high court verdict of 2017. Such allotments would result in encroachment of pavements when these booths are set up, they said.
“According to the high court’s September 2017 verdict, no dairy booths are allowed outside the demarcated vending zones of the city. The verdict also states that these booths would be of 6 feet by 4 feet and should come up on a pavement that is at least 10 feet in breadth. Several dairy booths the government is allocating at present are outside the vending zones,” said Kaviraj Sethi, a member of the licensing committee.
JMC-Greater deputy mayor Punnet Karnawat said, “There are more than 900 dairy booths in Jaipur at present. The government wants to allot another 800 booths at one go. This will not be viable, and this would increase our problems”.
Several dairy booths under the two municipal corporations in the city are found encroaching the pavements, leaving no space for pedestrians to move, say JMC officials.
“The government and civic bodies took no step to regularize booths allotted before the verdict. There was also no inspection of illegal booths that came up on the pavements. A recent survey we conducted in Prithviraj Nagar locality found four illegal booths running with illegal numbers painted on them. There may be more than 50 such illegal booths across the city, and no one has any control on them,” said a JMC official.
While the same HC verdict banned the sale of cooked food items and tobacco products through these Saras Milk booths, these products are on sale at several booths
