CBI: Will keep summons to Abhishek Banerjee in abeyance

KOLKATA:
The CBI wrote on Tuesday to Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee saying it was keeping "in abeyance till further orders from the Supreme Court" its summons, issued Monday, asking him to appear for questioning.
The CBI said on Tuesday it was a "formality" to put the summons "in abeyance" if there was an order from the court. "We are duty-bound to send a corrective notice in case any summons has reached a person despite a court order," a CBI officer said. "There is a channel of communication through which information about the SC stay order should have reached us. But that did not happen," a CBI officer said.

Violence started taking place in Bengal after BJP gained some seats: TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee

Monday's CBI summons came about three hoursIndia after the SC had stayed an April 13 Calcutta HC order asking the agency to question Banerjee along with Kuntal Ghosh, an accused in the cash-for-jobs scam. The SC is expected to hear the matter next Monday.
Banerjee had moved a bench of CJI D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala on Monday morning against the Calcutta HC order. "We stay all action against Banerjee till the next date of hearing," the SC bench had said on Monday. About three hours after the apex court order a CBI notice reached Banerjee's 188A Harish Mukherjee Road residence at about 1.45 pm asking him to appear before a CBI superintendent at 11 am on Tuesday.
