Vadodara: Over 15,000 students hailing from economically weaker sections received benefits to the tune of Rs 4.12 crore through the Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW) scheme of M S University in the past five years.
MSU was the first university in Gujarat that started the scheme to provide financial assistance on the basis of the economic status of students in December 2012.
According to details shared by university officials, a total of Rs 4.12 crore were disbursed to 15,040 students including 7,916 boys and 7,124 girls between 2017 and 2022.
In the academic year 2017-18, the university disbursed Rs 77.74 lakh to 3,331 students including 1,530 boys and 1,801 girls under DSW scheme.
Later in 2018-19, Rs 82.60 lakh was disbursed to 3,537 students. In the next academic year (2019-20) 4,047 students received Rs 90.55 lakh under the scheme.
Similarly, Rs 60.40 lakh were disbursed to 2,004 students including 1,181 boys and 823 girls in 2020-21 while the total disbursement under DSW increased to Rs 1 crore in 2021-22, when 2,121 students including 1,306 boys and 815 girls were finalized as beneficiaries.
Senate member Mayank Patel had sought the details of disbursement from the university officials. The university invites applications from regular students under the scheme.
Students, whose total household income including the income of all family members living jointly in the same house, does not exceed a sum of Rs 3.50 lakh per annum are eligible for assistance under the scheme. Also, those students who have secured at least 55% marks in their preceding examination and have not availed financial assistance from any other source are eligible for the assistance.
