PUNE: The Kondhwa police have booked the president of a local NGO and his accomplice in a third extortion case. This time, they have been booked on the charge of extorting Rs 50.5 lakh from a developer since 2017.
The duo had allegedly extorted the money by blackmailing the developer about an illegal construction at Pokalemala in Pargenagar. The suspects offered to help the developer regularise the construction and warned that if he did not pay up, they would alert the authorities.
Assistant inspector Lekhaji Shinde on Monday said, "The duo threatened the developer that they would stop his illegal construction by reporting the same to the government authorities. They extorted Rs 50.5 lakh and spent the money on celebrating the NGO head's birthday, distributing sarees on Women's International Day, and purchasing a land parcel and a car among other reasons. The developer, who is based in Dubai, filed a complaint after the duo demanded Rs 3.5 lakh more."
Shinde said the suspects had promised to help the developer in getting the illegal construction regularised by paying compounding charges to the PMC. "They assured to get the complaints filed with the civic body withdrawn and get excavation work done without seeking permission from the revenue department. The suspects again demanded Rs 3.5 lakh to allow the builder to continue the construction work," he said.
However, fed up with their demands, the developer visited the police station to lodge a complaint after he got to know that the police had booked them in two extortion cases - one filed by an eatery owner and another lodged by a small-time developer, he added. This is the third extortion-related complaint registered against the NGO head and his aide, who are both on the run.
Assistant inspector Anil Survase, who is investigating the case, said a police team visited their office and residences, but they were not found.
The duo have moved the district and sessions court seeking anticipatory bail in one of the cases.
