Coimbatore college students turn dumpsite into 'Garden of Hope'
Students from the political science department of Government Arts College developed a garden on five-cent land in front of the department
COIMBATORE: A group of students from the political science department of Government Arts College in the city took up a piece of land in front of their department building and developed it into a garden.
Named as 'Garden of Hope', the lung space was inaugurated by collector Kranti Kumar Pati last week.
Vignesh and Sathyaseelan, who are pursuing their postgraduate course in the department, along with their junior Vishnu Kumar, a BA student, started the work on the five-cent land in front of the department 20 days ago. Subsequently other students joined.
P Kanagaraj, head of the department, said the spot was initially used to dump garbage. "Students voluntarily took up the work. They cleared garbage, levelled the surface and carried out other works to develop the garden. It was named as Garden of Hope to emphasize the fact that many things could be achieved by collective work. Some ornamental saplings have been planted. More saplings will be planted in the coming days."
Kanagaraj added that the garden has inspired other department students too. He hoped more students involve in such activities and improve the green cover in the area.
Principal Ulagi also lauded the efforts of the students.
