India’s power consumption in fiscal 2022-23 (FY23) grew by 9.5 per cent year on year (YoY) to 1,503.65 billion units (BU), primarily due to growth in economic activities, according to the latest official data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). The consumption was 1,374.02 BU in FY22. Power consumption and demand are expected to rise further in FY24.

The peak power demand also rose to 207.23 GW in FY23—higher than 200.53 GW recorded in FY22—and the power ministry estimates that will likely touch 229 GW in the coming summer season.

The government has asked plants running on imported coal to run at full capacity keeping in view the rising demand.

Power plants running on domestic coal have also been asked to import for blending to meet the expected rise in demand.
