PATNA: Two prisoners of Shahid Khudiram Bose Central Jail have died during treatment at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital in Muzaffarpur during the last 72 hours. Both were arrested in a drunken state with liquor.
Amar Paswan (35), who was arrested under Hathori police station area, died on Friday evening while Hare Sahni, in his late 30s and from Kolhua Paigambarpur under Ahiyapur police station area succumbed during treatment on Thursday. Their relatives staged protest outside the hospital and alleged medical negligence. They also demanded compensation from the government.
Jail superintendent Brijesh Singh Mehta said Amar was arrested on April 9 by Hatori police station under Section 30A of the Prohibition Act while Sahni was arrested on April 8. "Prima facie, it appears they died due to alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Both of them were addicted to alcohol. When he was sent to jail, the protocol for liquor prisoners was followed, like medication and counselling at the prison health facility," he said.
Mehta said when their health did not improve, they were referred to SKMCH where they died during the treatment. "Sahni died around 9pm on Thursday while Amar succumbed on Friday around 7pm," Mehta said.
SKMCH police outpost in-charge Vijay Prasad said, "The post-mortem of the deceased have been conducted in the presence of the magistrate, following which the bodies were handed over to their family members for performing the last rites," he said.
