NAVI MUMBAI: A traffic cop flagging down a motorist for jumping a signal was dragged along 20km, lying sprawled on the car bonnet, firmly grabbing the windshield, from Vashi up to Belapur and beyond Saturday afternoon. The car driver, Nerul resident Aditya Bemde (23), has been arrested. He was driving under the influence of drugs, the police said.
Traffic constable Siddheshwar Mali (37) escaped unhurt after lying precariously atop the front portion of the car. Typically, it takes at least 15-20 minutes to cover this distance. The incident has been captured on CCTV cameras put up at several locations on Palm Beach Road.

The cop was on duty when he spotted the car graze past a scooter while jumping the red signal at Blue Diamond junction. He gestured to the motorist to halt, but the driver revved up. Before the cop could move out of the car's path, he had landed on the bonnet. Still refusing to stop, the motorist swerved to the left, towards Palm Beach Road, driving in a zig-zag manner, jumping all traffic signals along the way right up to Gavhan phata.
By then, the police control room had received an alert about a cop being dragged on a car bonnet. Cops along the way were alerted by wireless messages. The car, with the cop still on the bonnet, was waylaid at Gavhan phata by parking a container-laden, to block the road.
Senior inspector of Vashi police station, Shashikant Chandekar, said: "A medical test on the driver has confirmed that he was driving under the influence of drugs... He had consumed ganja."
The arrested man has been booked for attempt to murder and he has also been booked under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
