Family in Assam's Sivasagar engaged in making dhols since Ahom era

A family in Sivasagar, Assam has been engaged in making dhols since the reign of the Ahom Dynasty. Dhol is a big part of Bihu festivities.According to legend Ahom king Rudra Singha who ruled Assam in the late 17th century had asked some families to make dhols to be used in Bihu festivities. One of those families has kept the tradition aliveAmit Saikia, the main dholmaker of the family of the current generation, has continued the practice. In the bihu season people visit Saikia's village for repair and maintenance of their dhols.The family lives in Phulpanisiga of Sivasagar district, which is famous for the practice of making dhols.
