KOLKATA: Cops have arrested a 48-year-old man, trader of medical equipment and a resident of Ultadanga, for allegedly murdering his wife at their home on Friday.
DC (eastern suburban division) Gaurav Lal said they have arrested Amit Chatterjee after the initial post-mortem report found that the injury mark on the neck of victim Sampa Chatterjee (49) was homicidal in nature. "We have put Amit under arrest and started murder proceedings against him," said DC Lal. Sources claimed that the victim was probably strangulated with a rope or cloth.
The motive is being probed, said cops. "Prima facie, Amit has claimed that his wife was becoming increasingly short tempered. He claimed that after her epileptic bouts, she often became violent. However, we have not found any document that proves that Sampa was an epileptic patient. We are speaking to Sampa's brother and relatives if the accused habitually misbehaved with his wife and physically assaulted her. All probable angles will be probed. This will include the fact that the couple was childless and used to reside alone," said an investigating officer.
Amit had initially claimed that it was a case of suicide and that his wife hung herself. But, when the victim's relatives and police reached spot, they found her with a wound around her neck and there was no visible sign on the body that could support that she had ended her life, said police.
"We had our doubts when we saw the body. We waited for autopsy report before the arrest," said a source.
