4 people killed, multiple others wounded in Alabama birthday party shooting

Four people were killed and several others wounded in a shooting at an Alabama birthday party on Saturday night.

Cops swarmed Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio in Dadeville around 10:30 p.m.

Four victims died at the scene and many others were transported to a local hospital, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said. More than 20 people were shot, according to local CBS affiliate WRBL.

No suspects have been publicly identified or arrested.

Exactly what led to the shooting remains unclear. Witnesses said the gathering was a sweet 16 celebration and many of the victims were teenagers, WRBL reported.

“One of the young men that was killed was one of our star athletes and just a great guy,” said Danville police chaplain Ben Hayes. “So I knew many of these students. Dadeville is a small town and this is going to affect everybody in this area.”

Dadeville is about 40 miles northeast of Montgomery and home to around 3,000 residents.

“This morning, I grieve with the people of Dadeville and my fellow Alabamians,” Gov. Kay Ivey wrote on social media. “Violent crime has NO place in our state, and we are staying closely updated by law enforcement as details emerge.”

President Biden was also briefed on the shooting. The U.S. has been rocked by several mass shootings in recent weeks, including the March 27 attack on a Nashville elementary school and the April 10 mass shooting at a Louisville bank.
