Things aren't going well for suburban mother Kristin when the movie begins. (Collette). Her deadbeat husband Paul (Tim Daish) is cheating on her, her son Domenick (Tommy Rodger) is leaving for college, and few coworkers are interested in what she has to say. When Kristin's grandfather Giuseppe Balbano (Alessandro Bressanello) passes away, the seductive Bianca (Monica Bellucci) calls to tell her. It doesn't take much persuasion to get her on a plane to Italy for what she hopes will be a holiday.

When Kristin's grandfather Giuseppe Balbano (Alessandro Bressanello) passes away, the seductive Bianca (Monica Bellucci) calls to tell her. It doesn't take much persuasion to get her on a plane to italy for what she hopes will be a holiday. However, there's more to the story, as Kristin quickly discovers: It was her grandfather's dying dream that she would succeed him as the leader of a prominent crime family.

When it comes to disclosing the truth about the Balbano family to Kristin (and, by extension, the audience), Mafia Mamma smartly plays its cards close to its chest. Hardwicke and screenwriters J. Michael Feldman and Debbie Jhoon (working on an original tale by Amanda Sthers) don't provide many hints about what is in store for Kristin in italy, save for a dramatic beginning in which Bianca is seen strolling among dead bodies (the outcome of a meeting gone awry). This just heightens the suspense of the inevitable shift that occurs when Giuseppe's burial is interrupted. The audience is as perplexed as Kristin is, and Collette skillfully captures her character's perplexity, denial, and profound discomfort.

Because of this, the plot feels very thin, but Mafia Mamma knows how to have fun, which makes it entertaining to watch. Collette is obviously having a blast in this scene, welcoming Kristin's lack of knowledge in the criminal underworld and her strong aspirations. Even though Feldman and Jhoon's script isn't as interested in challenging Kristin's progress, Collette sells it admirably. Kristin is a captivating character. Bellucci is enigmatic and surprisingly kind as Bianca, and her chemistry with Collette is fascinating. One of the best aspects of Mafia Mamma is seeing Bellucci and Collette complement each other as Bianca very much acts as a mentor to Kristin.

The fact that Mafia Mamma is not a serious film contributes to its enjoyment. It avoids getting mired in the details of its story, instead opting to enjoy the underlying comedy that results from an underappreciated middle-aged lady taking control of a sizable crime family. The humour and Collette's acting make Mafia Mamma a good ride even though it would have been lovely to learn more about Kristin's rise to mafia leader status.
