Vivekananda Reddy murder case: CBI arrests Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Mohan Reddy's uncle

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday arrested YS Bhaskar Reddy, uncle of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and father of YSRCP MP Avinash Reddy in connection with the former MP and his brother Vivekananda Reddy murder case.

Bhaskar Reddy was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CBI from his residence at Pulivendula in Kadapa district. The CBI officials handed over the arrest memo to Bhaskar’s family and took him into custody.

Bhaskar Reddy is the fifth accused to be arrested in the case. He and his son Avinash Reddy were earlier questioned by the CBI.

The 49-year-old MP will be shifted to Hyderabad by the CBI where he will be produced before a magistrate today evening. Supporters of Avinash Reddy and Bhaskar Reddy have gathered in large numbers in front of his residence in the city.

Bhaskar Reddy was taken into custody two days after police arrested G Uday Kumar Reddy who was a close follower of Avinash Reddy, the nephew of the deceased who has been questioned by the agency several times in recent months.

He was brought to Hyderabad and produced before a CBI court which sent him to judicial custody.

The Supreme Court last week appointed a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the agency and ordered it to wrap up the investigation by April 30 which prompted the CBI to move the investigation ahead quickly.

A few days prior to the polls, on the evening of March 15, 2019, Vivekananda Reddy, the uncle of the present Andra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and the brother of former CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy, was found dead at his home in Pulivendula of Kadapa district. The 68-year-old former state minister and MP was home alone when unidentified assailants broke through the door and murdered him.

In 2020, the Andhra Pradesh High Court ordered the CBI to take up the investigation into the matter after hearing a petition from Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy who voiced suspicions regarding some family members.

The AAP supremo accused the two probe agencies of lying under oath and misleading the court to frame Sisodia, who was arrested by the CBI in February in connection with the alleged excise policy scam.

Kejriwal said that appropriate cases will be filed against the ED and the CBI for “perjury and producing false evidence” while also claiming that the two federal agencies are catching someone every day and torturing them—mentally and physically—to force them to name Delhi ministers in the excise policy case.
