2 men booked in Madurai for child marriage

MADURAI: The Madurai city police on Friday booked two men in separate incidents for marrying and raping minor girls.
According to police, M Santhosh Gopi Krishnan, 28, of Thirupparankundram, married a minor girl around 10 months ago in a child marriage and raped her. She became pregnant and gave birth to a baby recently. Based on the complaint from the village women welfare officer, the all women police station, registered a case and booked Santhosh under sections of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
In another incident, under the limits of all women police station, South, K Dineshpavar Singh, 23, of Mahaboopalayam married a minor girl in August 2022 and raped her. The girl became pregnant and subsequently gave birth to a stillborn child. Based on the girl’s complaint, a case was registered at AWPS South and Singh was booked under section 366 of the IPC for abduction with intent to compel marriage, and sections of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and POCSO Act.
