TWO labourers working on the demolition of a decrepit house in Rajgurunagar town, Pune district, died after being crushed under rubble when a large part of the structure suddenly collapsed on them.
The incident took place on Sunday at an old house located near Azad Chowk in Rajgurunagar. Police said the two deceased – Pramod Panchal (20) hailed from Udgir taluka of Latur district, and Vinay Wadekar (32), hailed from Khed taluka of Pune district.
“The two workers were employed by a contractor Bilal Momin to demolish the dilapidated house. Around 5.15 pm on Sunday when work was underway, a large part of the structure collapsed on them. Both were trapped under the debris,” said Inspector Rajkumar Kendre, in-charge of Khed police station.
Police personnel and local residents rushed to the spot. Earth movers were deployed to remove the rubble and take the two men out. Both were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead, officials said. The debris comprised bricks, soil and heavy wooden columns.
Officials said that prima facie no safety gear was provided to the labourers. Inspector Kendre said the labourers died of multiple serious injuries. “We have registered a case of accidental death pending a probe into the cause. If negligence on any person’s part comes to light, an offence will be registered.”
