Tarak Arolkar was arrested late Saturday night in the case
Panaji: Councillor of the Mapusa municipal council Tarak Arolkar, who was arrested by the crime branch late Saturday night in connection with the case of a fake call centre, was granted conditional bail by the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC), Mapusa on Sunday.
Arolkar was arrested for allegedly abetting the crime. The police said the call centre was operated from a rented property at Colvale, which is owned by a family member of Arolkar.
Last week the police busted the fake call centre that was allegedly defrauding U.S. citizens. The police had arrested 33 people, including eight women, in the case and seized 26 computers with accessories.
The court had also granted conditional bail to the 33 accused. However, they are in judicial custody as bail conditions are yet to be complied with, said police officials. The fake call centre was allegedly defrauding U.S. citizens by impersonating as customer service representatives of an online shopping site. The accused allegedly tricked the foreigners into paying a certain amount on the pretext of resolving their purchase issues.
The accused are from different Indian states; the main accused Jigar Parmar (35) hails from Ahmedabad.
