GHAZIABAD: A 36-year-old woman died and her 59-year-old father suffered grievous injuries when the scooter they were riding was hit by a car in Raj Nagar area on Friday.
Police said Maninder Kaur and her father Balwinder were headed to a hospital with food for her brother when the accident occurred around noon near the railway station.
Abhishek Srivastava, ACP (Kavi Nagar), said the two had taken a turn from the Ring junction when the car hit them from behind.
"Passersby called police and the two were taken to a private hospital. Maninder was referred to GTB Hospital in Delhi when her condition deteriorated. She died there during treatment. Balwinder is critical too," he added.
Karamjeet Singh, the woman's brother, said his sister was coming to meet him at the hospital, where he was admitted with high fever. "I got news about the accident from police. Police asked our family to visit the hospital as soon as possible. We learnt that my sister is no more while my father is battling for life," he added.
Karamjeet said his sister was separated from her husband for the past five years and stayed in Sihani gate with her daughter (5). "The accident has shocked us. My sister was taking care of the entire family," he added.
The car fled the spot after the accident, police said. "Everything happened so fast that no one could note down the number. We have formed two teams to nab the accused driver. One police team is checking CCTV footage within a 500-metre radius of the accident spot. We are waiting for a complaint to register an FIR in the case," Srivastava said.
