Vijayawada police, which registered an offence of kidnapping on April 9, started by scanning CCTV footage at the railway station. They found that the girl was picked up by a woman having short hair and dishevelled appearance. Shortly after kidnapping the girl, the woman boarded the Tirupati Express.
Following the trail of CCTV footage of stations where Tirupati Express halted, Vijayawada police found that the woman had got down at platform number one at Nagpur on April 5. She was last seen walking out of the railway station towards the main gate.
A police team under SI M Durga Maheshwar Rao from Vijaywada police and city police crime branch squad under SI Balram Zadokar have been scrutinizing CCTV footage of Nagpur railway station and nearby areas.
DCP crime Mummaka Sudarshan has deputed a special squad to assist the Andhra Pradesh team. The combined teams are now visiting various places to scan CCTV cameras. “Even CCTV cameras in the command-and-control (CoC) centre are being scanned for some clues,” said an official.
Rao, who offered his cellphone number (9492866719) to get any clues, said the victim’s parents are from West Bengal, and had moved to Vijaywada to find work as labourers.
City police officials feel the woman may have moved out of the city since begging has been prohibited here. “The woman seemed to be mentally disturbed, and could be living off begging,” said a Nagpur police official.
