Bodycam video shows New Mexico officers fatally shoot man after responding to wrong address
Bodycam footage released by authorities in northwestern New Mexico show officers responding to the wrong residence and then opening fire on the confused homeowner, who was fatally struck in the violent chaos.
The Farmington Police Department on Friday released video from body cameras worn by the three officers who were involved in the shooting that left 52-year-old Robert Dotson dead. According to a police news release, additional “records and files” are slated to be made public following further review and redaction.
“All of us, the men and women of the Farmington Police Department, recognize the severity of this incident,” Chief Steven Hebbe said. “We will do everything possible to more fully understand what transpired here.”
Farmington officers were called to 5308 Valley View Ave. to investigate a domestic violence complaint on April 5 around 11:30 p.m. The newly released bodycam clips show law enforcement arriving on Valley View Avenue and then approaching house 5305, located just across the street from where the incident was reported.
The officers knock on the door several times and repeatedly identify themselves as police, but no one answers. One officer then asks a dispatcher for clarity on the address and to call the person who reported the incident.
“It’s not 5308? That’s what it said right there, right?” the knocking officer can be heard saying, referring to the house number displayed next to the garage door.
“No, it said 5305, isn’t it?” another officer responds.
One of them then asks for confirmation of the address through his radio, and is told 5308.
The first responders seemingly chuckle at the confusion and begin to leave just as Dotson, armed with a handgun, opens the door. The officers, none of whom have been identified, immediately start shooting in response.
Dotson was pronounced dead on the scene.
Why officers approached the wrong address remains part of an ongoing investigation being carried out by the New Mexico State Police.
“Once again, we wish to express our condolences to the Dotson family and as your chief of police, I wish to convey how very sorry I am that this tragedy occurred. We will continue to provide updates as we are able.” Hebbe said.
All three officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
