MYSURU: There is a direct face-off between Congress and JD(S) in more than 50% of the seats in Mysuru district, which has eleven assembly segments. In this assembly election, the national party Congress and the regional party JD(S) are trying their best to increase their tally.
Congress and JD(S) currently have four legislators each and BJP three. If Congress aims to reclaim the lost constituencies during the previous election, the regional party is aiming to strengthen its base further. Congress and JD(S) are in a direct fight in five assembly segments- Periyapatna, KR Nagar, Hunsur, T Narasipura and HD Kote constituencies.
Congress is especially focusing on KR Nagar constituency, which is currently held by JD(S) leader SR Mahesh, who has created history by winning three elections continuously since 2008. Mahesh has also equalled the record held by former minister S Nanjappa, a three-time MLA from KR Nagar. The seat has been held by JD(S) since 2004 and it has won the election four-times against Congress when the party was first runners-up. The segment has become a stranglehold of the JD(S), which aims to retain the seat. Congress on the other hand will try to defeat JD(S) here.
BJ Vijaykumar, chief of Mysuru district Congress, said we are quite confident of winning KR Nagar segment. "I have been asked to focus on the segment and to ensure victory there," he said. There is anti-incumbency and people are not happy with Mahesh, voters want to give Congress an opportunity, he said. Voters say Doddaswamegowda's family have lost two elections - one by Doddaswamegowda (Congress) in 2013 and then his son, D Ravishankar (Cong), lost in 2018 - and they want to give them an chance this time. Previously, Congress lost the election by a margin of just 1,700 plus votes, he said.
Narasimha Swamy, chief of JD(S) Mysuru district, said it is a common grievance against sitting MLAs that there is anti-incumbency. He said that JD(S) has been always growing in the constituency and has won elections four-times since 2004. This time too we'll win in KR Nagar, and in other seats too, he said.
