As many as eight BJP functionaries have been served notices by the Chhattisgarh Police for alleged “hateful” posts on social media, a senior official said on Friday, adding that the saffron party men have been asked to appear before the cops.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Raipur, Prashant Agrawal said that BJP functionaries namely— BJP spokesperson Sanjay Shrivastava, IT cell in-charge of BJP Chhattisgarh’s Twitter handle Sunil Pillai, treasurer Nandan Jain, BJP trade cell president Kedarnath Gupta, BJP Yuva Morcha Mandal president Yogi Sahu, divisional Yuva Morcha coordinator Kamal Sharma, DD Nagar BJP Yuva Morcha member Shubhankar and party worker Bittu Panigrahi—have been asked to appear in person and present factual evidence related to such posts.

The senior officer said the notices were issued as per the October 21, 2022 Supreme Court directing action against hate speeches.

In the notice, the BJP members have been accused of using derogatory terms against Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel in connection with last week’s communal violence in Biranpur village in Bemetara district.

On April 12, the Congress had filed a police complaint against the above listed BJP men for allegedly “spreading hate” via social media posts.

On April 8, communal violence rocked Biranpur village, 60 kilometers from Bemetara town, purportedly after a fight between school kids. The clashes led to the death of a Biranpur resident, identified as 22-year-old Bhuvaneshwar Sahu, while three police personnel also sustained injuries.

Following the clashes, prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC were imposed in the area and heavy deployment of around 1,000 policemen was made in and around the village to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation.

Two days later, two houses were torched during a statewide shutdown called by right-wing groups against the Biranpur incident while two Muslim men— Rahim Mohammad (55) and his son Idul Mohammad (34)—were found dead with critical wounds, in an adjacent village on April 11.
