Attorney General: Paterson standoff with man wielding knife ended in surrender
PATERSON – After a standoff that lasted more than six hours, law enforcement officers convinced a man wielding a knife and claiming he was suicidal to surrender and hand over his weapon, officials announced Friday afternoon.
The incident happened on April 8 and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office waited six days before releasing any information about what happened, despite multiple inquiries by Paterson Press on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. State officials did not provide an explanation for the delay in issuing the press release.
Authorities said they decided not to file charges against the man because of his mental health crisis and they have not revealed his name.

The incident was the first prolonged police standoff involving someone with a weapon since the AG’s Office took over operations of the Paterson Police Department. The April 8 incident had some similarities to case that seemed to precipitate the AG takeover − the police standoff with Najee Seabrooks on March 3, which ended when officers shot Seabrooks as he charged at them with the knife while reportedly impaired by drugs.
Officials said the Crisis Team from St. Joseph’s University Medical Center provided assistance during the April incident, but the AG’s office did not provide details on precisely what role the hospital crisis workers played other than to say they helped with the “transition to mental health services upon resolution.”

The April 8 incident started just before 5 p.m. and ended at almost 11:30 pm. The AG’s Office said it happened near the Great Falls. Law enforcement sources said it took place near the NJ Transit bus terminal on Market Street in the Great Falls district.
“I want to thank the officers of the Paterson Police Department and New Jersey State Police who responded to Saturday’s call,” said New Jersey State Police Maj. Frederick Fife.
Fife is in command of the Paterson Police Department on an interim basis under the state takeover until retiring New York Police Department Chief of Strategic Operatives Isa Abbassi takes over in May.
