NAGPUR: For the first time this season, Nagpur crossed the 40-degree mark and recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degree Celsius on Thursday. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), this temperature was 0.6 degree above the normal mercury level.
Apart from Buldhana, Gadchiroli and Washim, all the other districts of Vidarbha surpassed the 40-degree mark on Thursday. Met department’s forecast shows that temperatures in Nagpur are expected to witness a further rise in the coming week, with maximum temperatures touching 42 degrees. On Friday and Saturday, thunderstorm and gusty winds are expected in some districts of the region.
At 43.2 degrees Celsius, Chandrapur was the hottest in the region and second hottest in the world, as per the weather forecasting website El Dorado. Another city from Vidarbha that was among the world’s 15 hottest cities on Thursday was Wardha, which at 42.2 degree Celsius was ranked No. 12.
On Wednesday, Chandrapur was the hottest in the country boiling at 42.2 degree Celsius. On April 11 too, it recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degrees.
Expressing concern over the rising temperatures in the city, environmentalists stated that large-scale coal burning for power generation and presence of other polluting industries has been turning the city into a heat island. “High vehicular pollution, presence of large-scale coal mines, and burning of coal as domestic fuel further adds to high temperature conditions of the city,” they said.
